Thanksgiving Excursion in Transylvania – 2015
November 25 - 29, 2015 (Wednesday - Sunday)
Transylvania Alive’s Thanksgiving excursion begins in Cluj-Napoca on Wednesday (November 25) with a welcome dinner. On Thanksgiving, we will visit the major monuments of Cluj-Napoca, including the cathedral of Archangel Michael, the Reformist Church to St. George, and the house of Mathias Corvin. We will travel 80km to Moigrad/Porolissum to a B+B modeled upon a Roman villa for a Thanksgiving banquet and to spend the night. On Friday morning, we will visit the Roman city, the botanical gardens of Jibou, and wooden churches along the route to Turda. On Saturday morning, we will visit the salt mines in Turda, a Roman fortress at Potaissa, and then return to Cluj-Napoca for the night. Students should plan their departure from Cluj on Sunday (November 29).
Wednesday (November 25) Arrive Cluj-Napoca, welcome dinner
Thursday (November 26) Visit Medieval/Early Modern Cluj-Napoca; night at Porolissum
Friday (November 27) Visit Roman fortress at Porolissum, botanical gardens at Jibou, wooden churches; night at Turda
Saturday (November 28) Visit salt mines at Turda, night in Cluj-Napoca
Sunday (November 29) Departure from Cluj-Napoca
The excursions are led by Dr. Eric De Sena, an American archaeologist who taught for 10 years at American universities in Italy and directed an American overseas research institute in Bulgaria. De Sena co-directed the Porolissum Forum Project in northwestern Romania for 7 years, a project that had about 80 alumni from North America, Europe and Australia. De Sena is founder and director of the NGO, Transylvania Alive Association for Cultural Heritage.
The cost of the Thanksgiving excursion is US$400, which includes hotels with breakfast, van with driver, 3 lunches (Nov. 26, 27, 28) and 3 dinners (Nov. 25, 26, 27), tickets into sites and museums, and instruction. The fee does not cover travel to/from Romania, taxi to/from Cluj-Napoca airport, or insurance.
